What we believe

Tools, not platforms.

The web fragmented into walled gardens. Newsrooms rent attention from feeds they don't own. Publishers serve their readers through algorithms tuned for engagement, not information. The independent web — the one you can actually link to, archive, and build on top of — keeps shrinking.

Fifth Avenue Photographic builds the opposite. Self-hosted WordPress platforms that publishers, newsrooms, and operators run on their own infrastructure. Real URLs. Standard RSS. Source attribution by default. Tools that respect the reader, the publisher, and the open standards underneath.

We don't do agency work. We don't take ad money. We ship products — slowly, deliberately, and to the open WordPress directory where anyone can install, audit, and fork them.

Operating principles

How we build.

01

Ship to WordPress.org

Every plugin we publish goes through the official WordPress.org review process. It's slower than self-hosting our own downloads, but it means the WordPress community has audited the code, the privacy disclosures are public, and updates flow through the standard channel users already trust.

02

Standard primitives only

Standard posts, standard taxonomies, standard hooks. No proprietary page builders, no custom database schemas, no lock-in. If you uninstall our work, what stays behind is normal WordPress content any other theme or plugin can read.

03

Attribution over aggregation

When our tools surface another publisher's work, we link out — with the publisher's name, masthead, and direct URL. We don't scrape, we don't obscure source, and we don't monetize someone else's reporting.

04

No telemetry

Our plugins don't phone home. We don't collect usage analytics, we don't register your install with our servers, and we don't maintain a list of who runs our software. If we don't have the data, no one can ask us for it.

05

GPL all the way down

Every line of code we ship is GPL-2.0-or-later. You can read it, fork it, modify it, redistribute it. Open source isn't a marketing position for us — it's the operating model.

06

Documentation is product

A feature without a written explanation is half-shipped. Every plugin includes an in-admin FAQ, every theme ships a README, every option has a Customizer description. If you can't figure it out from the docs, that's a bug.

Behind the name

Why "Fifth Avenue Photographic"?

The name predates the WordPress work. The company started with a different craft entirely — composition, framing, the discipline of deciding what to leave out of a frame.

That discipline carried over. Modern web products suffer from the opposite problem: too much in the frame, too many features, too many surfaces competing for attention. Our products try to be the photographer's choice instead of the camera's — deliberate, framed, finished.

The name stays as a reminder of where the eye comes from. The work has moved to code.
