[Perspectives] The pathologising of healthy ageing

Abstract
While training in medicine I was still a literary lecturer and novelist and, on a break between medical school placements, was asked to do a lecture tour of bookshops and colleges with an older writer. In his readings, he evoked a tormented character, an ageing woman who would dance alone in her remote home to Keep Young and Beautiful, a song from the 1933 film Roman Scandals. The tune to the song was dance-hall catchy in an infectious major key, which disguised the dark power of lyrics such as
